cost: $400, $500, 0r $600 (sliding scale, you decide)

speculative (noun):
1. involving, based on, or constituting intellectual speculation; theoretical rather than demonstrable knowledge
2. marked by questioning curiosity
speculate (verb):
from Latin speculatus, conjugate of speculari, to spy, examine; specula meaning watchtower; specere, to look
If speculation means not just thinking but also looking, then trans writers are always speculating, looking, as well as being looked at, watched, examined, scrutinized. In fiction, we can reflect this speculation back on to the world; we can make it serve our own ends. In times of increased censorship, fascism, and anti-trans legislation, the trans speculative is especially life-giving for the possibilities it offers for nourishment, retribution, and self-discovery. Over 4 months of biweekly classes alternating with cowriting sessions, we’ll stretch our imaginations, share feedback on works in progress, and study techniques of perspective, form, and syntax by some of the most interesting trans writers working in speculative fiction today.
This workshop is not just for trans writers, but for anyone with an interest in the vitality of trans literature; i.e. you don’t need to prove you’re trans to sign up. Be ready to read & write outside your comfort zone. 17 weeks. Classes will be a mixture of discussion, lecture, workshop, play, and occasional guest speakers. All classes will take place online, and will culminate in a Zoom reading open to the public in May 2026.
All students are invited to participate in a biweekly cowrite & chat session on alternating Thursdays from 5-7pm PST, for the following calendar year, beginning from the date of their first class.
